Robert's speech at MIT began a debate which was taken forward by Daniel J Weitzner of MIT. The Crypto 2018 Workshop on Encryption and Surveillance was hosted by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (ACR) in Santa Barbara, California. It let to a long exchange on the Lawfare Blog focusing on 'Exceptional Access' along the lines proposed by Robert in his MIT speech. In November 2018, two GCHQ mathematicians published an influential essay on the principles which might govern such special and targeted access. This in turn has led to a lengthy debate, with contributions from leading privacy and data specialists, such as Susan Landau and Bruce Schneier, and some of the world's leading cryptographers.
